The Symmetrical Cube Matrix

Structure and analysis of a symmetrical (associative) pandiagonal magic square and the application of its three-dimensional derivative as a compositional model. More to come...

Emlyn Ellis Addison

What is said through art does not change; only how it's said.

Emlyn's compositional philosophy is rooted in the processes and strategies of structure. His New Narratives Through Tranformations Of Structure series explores the effect of structure on meaning through the mutation and variation of melodic memes: popular melodies are transformed by altering their context.

Intrapsychological Exposures is a cycle of works structured on artificial harmonic overtone series, which explores our capacity to experience events, the self, others, and actions in context of time.

Ideas that can be represented by numbers, shapes and colors can theoretically also be represented by frequencies. His Symmetrical Cube Matrix is an analysis of a musical structure formed within number sets and geometry.

Emlyn was born in 1972 in Somerset West, South Africa. He emigrated to the United States in 1990 and began his studies in music at Glendale Community College. He received a Bachelor of Music degree in music theory and composition from the Arizona State University School of Music in 1995 and completed his graduate studies in music composition and new media at the California Institute of the Arts in 1998.

Emlyn lives in Providence, Rhode Island.
